Winter Wonderland

February 12th, 2011

By now most of the World is experiencing snow…or at least it seems that way to me. I am almost 8 years old and this is the most snow I have ever seen in my entire life! Those guys who say they are my owners, but in reality are my servants,  seem to take delight in this white stuff covering the entire ground! Sure, I have fur which insulates me from the cold…but my paws become somewhat chilled after chasing squirrels from the feeder. After all do those squirrels think this is a free meal?? Well it is a fun game…maybe a free meal. I cannot stay out in this cold forever guarding the bird feeders. One winter game that seems to amuse my servants is they throw a tennis ball…love to catch those tennis balls and grind them to soft, mushy, gooey, chewy yellow felt! But then one of the wise guys throws a snow ball for me to catch…at first it was funny…for them! Now after the millionth time it has become not so funny for me! But I get so caught up in catching (like the play on words) tennis balls that I forget their little trick. Maybe they will find it funny when I chase one of them down and use their clothing as a giant napkin!! Of course they think I am just jumping on them with glee and excitement…they are so clueless at times! But guess I will keep them around…after all they do keep the bird feeders filled, my milk bone bowl filled…and they make great tennis ball throwers. Such are the simple things in life! Hope all of you are enjoying Winter Fun wherever you are unless you are in the desert and have no snow to play in or do cool things with like me. You should see the Snow Dog I made…well it is abstract…I was hiding a bone and the pile I left resembled…well a Snow Dog!

Hope to see you outdoors soon!

Adventure on Sanibel Island

June 30th, 2010

If you are looking for a summer getaway, but think the Caribbean may be too expensive. Let me share a place that my people escape to beat prices and the crowds. Sanibel Island is off the coast of Fort Myers and for us a quick plane trip places us at the Fort Myers Airport…a car rental for the 30 minute drive to Sanibel Island. First stop is Publix, a local grocery store chain popular in Florida and other points South…then onward to our destination. If you should forget something, Baileys is the local grocery store on the island that can supply all of your needs. But if you are on a budget…(no clue what that is in dog terms) stop at Publix first. Wait, budget…seems I heard mention rationing of Milk Bones…not a good thing.

Once there the beaches are some of the best in the world…you can kayak, hook up with a local charter boat and snorkel, or fish with some of the local guides. By the way, this is the home of Randy Wayne White…try saying that three times in a row after drinking a few beers! Sounds kind of like a strange bird call…Like a Loony Bird!! Randy was a fishing guide on Sanibel Island for a number of years before he became a famous author. He has written for Outside Magazine, but is best known for his character…Doc Ford. Read Randy’s Books…you will not be disappointed.

Great places abound to eat on both Islands…Captiva Island is connected by a short bridge to Sanibel…check out the Green Flash for fancy meals or if you want a fresh caught fish (seriously they have a dock…I am sure that was the cook’s assistant fishing from the dock)…or if you want  more simple food like  burgers and fries with a cold beer (they have a huge selection of beers)  go to Mucky Ducks. Be sure to bring bug repellent for the no see ums…you will find out what I mean if you do not understand this term. After dinner stroll a whole ten yards to the beach where the only thing between you and the sunset is the ocean. People like to see the many colors produced by these sunsets I am told…mostly I am napping until all the excitement dies down.

A nickname for Sanibel is Shell Island…easy to understand why once you begin walking the beaches. Almost hate to post this because I am afraid my favorite spot may become too popular. But if you do decide to come here look me up I am the good looking dog with goofy owners and a stupid cat for a buddy.

Hope to see you outdoors!
